• The hearing followed a scathing 162-page White House report released July 4 that accused the Smithsonian Institution of engaging in “extreme political activism” and presenting “a radical view of American history.”
• Gill asked Hartig whether it is important to be polite; she answered yes, after which he noted that the MASS Action Toolkit promoted by her organization lists politeness as a defining characteristic of white supremacy culture.
• When Gill asked if she is a white supremacist based on the museum’s own materials, Hartig replied “no” and claimed she was “not exactly familiar” with the passage he had just read.
• Gill pressed further on whether the museum is promoting a white supremacy culture; Hartig froze, grabbed her notepad, and began writing instead of answering directly.
