In this LifeNews article, Liberty Counsel reports that Oklahoma and Iowa have enacted new laws targeting mail-order abortion drugs, joining Mississippi in efforts to restrict the distribution of chemical abortion pills through the mail.

  • Oklahoma’s House Bill 1168, signed by Gov. Kevin Stitt, makes abortion pill trafficking a felony when the drugs are delivered or possessed with intent to cause an illegal abortion under the state’s near-total abortion ban.
  • Violations in Oklahoma could carry penalties of up to 10 years in prison, a $100,000 fine, or both, with the law taking effect November 1, 2026.
  • Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed House File 2788, which bars mail-order abortion pills and requires the drugs to be obtained through an in-person doctor visit.
  • Iowa’s law also allows civil liability for out-of-state providers who mail abortion drugs into the state and potential licensing discipline for in-state doctors.
  • The Iowa measure clarifies that treatment for miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies does not count as abortion under the state’s heartbeat law.
  • The article notes that chemical abortion pills now account for a large share of abortions nationwide, making mail-order distribution a major battleground in the post-Roe legal fight.
  • Louisiana is separately challenging Biden-era FDA rules that relaxed restrictions on mifepristone, including mail-order access.
  • The Supreme Court recently allowed mail-order access to mifepristone to remain in place while Louisiana’s challenge continues in the Fifth Circuit.
  • Liberty Counsel’s Mat Staver praised Oklahoma and Iowa for trying to stop mail-order abortion pill access, arguing that such laws protect unborn children and women.
