Civilian helicopter pilots have been the unsung heroes in helping to find survivors and deliver supplies after Hurricane Helene. In fact, for a while, they were ordered to get out of the airspace, even though the government wasn’t providing airlifted support yet. That controversy has been resolved, but a new one has taken its place.
I was talking to a helicopter pilot the other day who was regaling stories about piloting helos in combat. Indeed, Don Bentley, who has taken over writing the Vince Flynn spy thriller novels, was an Apache Helicopter pilot in Afghanistan. He was sent to find the survivors of Operation Redwings. Marcus Luttrell, you’ll recall, was the “Lone Survivor” of that op.
With the help of an Iowa Air National Guard Chinook helicopter, we successfully evacuated 34 elderly residents from Burnsville this evening. It was an absolute honor to assist these fellow Americans in their time of greatest need. A huge thank you to our first responders and… pic.twitter.com/m8YI5Nqfgs

Helo pilots do more than just deliver “steel on target” as Bentley puts it in his first “Mitch Rapp” novel, “Capture or Kill.” They do more than deliver troops to a landing zone (LZ). These pilots can do all kinds of things; they control crowds and scare away bad guys. They can do this with rotor wash. They use it to do just that in one of the Flynn books, as a matter of fact. See the Adult in the Room Podcast conversation with Bentley below.
But you don’t do that to friendlies.
So when I saw images from the aftermath of the North Carolina victims of Hurricane Helena, I was shocked.
An unmarked Blackhawk helo hovered over a site where North Carolina relief workers were gathering life-saving supplies and bathed the site in rotor wash. Supplies went flying. Tents and popups, set up to protect the relief supplies from the elements, flew into the air like some homes went up in the storm. Reportedly, one person had to get medical attention after this display.

How to Prepare for Food Emergencies if You Don’t Have a Homestead or Bunker
In an unpredictable world, where supply chain disruptions, natural disasters, or economic instability can strike without warning, having a reliable food supply is more than just smart—it’s essential for survival. Whether you’re a “prepper” or not, we all know the golden rule: self-sufficiency is key. But what if you’re living in an apartment, working long hours, or simply don’t have the land to turn into a thriving homestead? Don’t worry; there’s a practical, effective way to build your food security without needing acres of soil or a fortified bunker.
The Ideal Prep: Building Your Own Food Empire
The ultimate dream for any serious prepper is controlling your own food production. Imagine waking up to a sprawling garden bursting with fresh vegetables, fruits, and herbs—tomatoes ripening on the vine, potatoes ready to harvest, and greens that provide nutrition year-round. Add in livestock like chickens for eggs and meat, and you’ve got a self-sustaining system that keeps your family fed no matter what chaos unfolds outside.
This approach isn’t just about calories; it’s about resilience. A well-maintained garden can yield hundreds of pounds of produce annually, while a small flock of chickens might produce dozens of eggs weekly. It’s empowering, cost-effective in the long run, and teaches invaluable skills like crop rotation, animal husbandry, and preservation techniques. If you have the space, time, and resources, starting small and scaling up is the best path to true independence.
The Reality Check: Not Everyone Can Homestead
But let’s face it—not all of us are in a position to go full homesteader. Urban dwellers might be limited to a balcony or community plot that’s far from sufficient for long-term needs. Busy professionals juggling jobs, families, and daily life often lack the hours required for daily tending. And for those in apartments, condos, or regions with harsh climates, raising livestock or maintaining a large garden simply isn’t feasible. Factors like zoning laws, soil quality, water access, or even physical limitations can make this ideal out of reach.
That’s where the frustration sets in. You want to be prepared, but without a homestead or bunker, how do you ensure your pantry doesn’t run dry during a prolonged crisis? The good news is, you don’t have to sacrifice your preparedness goals. There’s a smart, accessible alternative that bridges the gap: investing in high-quality, long-term storage food.

No it’s no accident. But I doubt there’s any coordinated conspiracy. I’d say it’s more a matter of a bunch of barney fife’s in law enforcement, fire departments, national guard, and so on, who aren’t flipping right in the head, have an axe to grind, way too much arrogance, and a major problem if they’re not in complete and total control of everything and everybody. So they’re going to undermine civilian, private efforts, every chance they get. Around here, we have some civilian atheists and pagans doing the same thing, bellyaching about the fact that food and supplies are being distributed by the churches. Of course, if they have a problem with God, they’re going to have a problem with that also, and would prefer it be done by the government.
“Barney fifes”??? This is North Carolina which has the Research Triangle Park. The relief services come from companies that have sweetheart deals with FEMA and the government agencies who promoted them give kickbacks to both. That is why local help was pushed aside. It is money making enterprise at the cost of lives
Bingo
Since when does an unmarked helo in black with no transponder operating become a NCNG helo, this was a fed helo, possibly a fed agency like CIA/FBI/ATF or maybe another fed agency helo.
You are absolutely correct, The Guard doesn’t fly helicopters without identifying marks. At least they shouldn’t be. More likely Blackrock or CIA.
Another aspect to the harsh rules that are now IMMEDIATELY exposed upon the public when disaster strikes any American community;
The enforcement of draconian dictates of NO right of passage, travel and even speech that frantic citizens face during those times. Civil order IS needed of course, but if there is No federal aid, personnel or supplies at the disaster site, why, as in Western North Carolina right after Helene, do some egotistical fedgov officials IMMEDIATELY attempt to stop regular citizens from going in to help?!!!
