In this NewsBusters article, Tim Graham highlights that CNN has been unusually tough on Michigan Senate candidate Abdul el-Sayed, repeatedly pressing him on his radical associations, past support for defunding the police, and refusal to affirm Israel’s right to exist.
- El-Sayed has campaigned with Hasan Piker, a streamer who has claimed America deserved 9/11 and called mass-murdering communist dictator Mao Zedong a “great leader.”
- On the July 19 edition of State of the Union, Jake Tapper confronted el-Sayed with audio in which he told staff he would not comment on the death of Iran’s Ayatollah Khamenei because “there are a lot of people in Dearborn who are sad today.”
- Tapper asked why el-Sayed was worried about offending supporters of an ayatollah responsible for killing tens of thousands of Iranians and funding proxies that murder civilians across the Middle East; el-Sayed deflected by changing the subject to U.S. service members and the war itself.
- On Inside Politics, Manu Raju played 2020 audio of el-Sayed stating he believed in “defunding the police” by disinvesting in incarceration and redirecting funds to social services, schools, and libraries; el-Sayed complained the host was “fixating on the word defund.”
- On the July 3 edition of The Arena, Kasie Hunt repeatedly asked whether Israel has a right to exist; el-Sayed would only say “Israel exists,” called the question a “gotcha game,” and insisted it was secondary to U.S. aid levels.
- Graham notes that leftists are unaccustomed to media scrutiny of their past radical statements and that CNN’s persistence with el-Sayed stands out as rare accountability applied to a Democrat.
