SDSU Wired Its Dorms With 1,300 AI Cameras Without Telling Students

In this Reclaim The Net article, Ben Squires reports that San Diego State University installed more than 1,300 AI-enabled surveillance cameras across campus, including more than 330 in student housing areas.

SDSU reportedly spent more than $1.3 million on the camera system, which was completed in 2024.
The cameras were placed in classroom buildings, bookstores, dining areas, parking structures, gyms, and residence halls.
According to the article, students learned the full scope of the dorm surveillance through reporting by The Daily Aztec, not from a direct university disclosure.
More than 330 cameras are reportedly located in student housing, representing close to 28 percent of the overall network.
The largest first-year dorm, Huaxyacac, reportedly has 79 cameras by itself, while Tenochca and Chapultepec have 36 and 33.
The cameras are Avigilon units, which the manufacturer says can support AI features such as facial recognition, license plate recognition, object detection, behavior analysis, crowd density analysis, and audio detection.
SDSU officials said students are informed about cameras through the Guide to Community Living handbook and campus housing website, but the article says those disclosures do not explain the AI capabilities.
Campus police said the system is used for basic motion detection in restricted areas and is not used for behavioral tracking, profiling, or facial recognition.
The article argues that the existence of AI-capable cameras in dorms raises privacy concerns regardless of whether those features are currently enabled.
SDSU officials also reportedly declined to publish camera locations or add signage, saying that doing so could jeopardize public safety.
