Pete Hegseth Lays Out Concerns to Chinese Counterpart

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth sat down with Chinese Defense Minister Adm. Dong Jun in Kuala Lumpur, marking their first in-person discussion amid rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific. The meeting, held on the sidelines of an ASEAN defense conference, lasted over an hour with no public details released beyond a Pentagon statement on maintaining open lines with the People’s Liberation Army.

Hegseth brought up U.S. worries over Beijing’s aggressive moves in the South China Sea, near Taiwan, and against American allies. He made clear that Washington has no desire for war but remains committed to protecting its stakes in the region.

“There is no intent from our side to coerce or confront, insult. That’s not part of our calculation. We are just a strong nation … that realistically looks at the world, wants our allies to take it the same way. We are going to work with them to do that,” Hegseth said in a recent interview.

Chinese officials, for their part, pushed back on U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, insisting that such actions only fuel instability. Senior Col. Zhang Xiaogang, a Defense Ministry spokesman, declared, “No matter how many weapons the Democratic Progressive Party authorities acquire, the cross-strait balance of military strength will remain unchanged, and the pursuit of Taiwan independence will remain a doomed cause.”

He added that Beijing remains open to building military ties based on equality and respect.

This exchange follows President Trump’s recent summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where trade deals eased some economic pressures, including promises on rare-earth minerals and U.S. farm exports. Trump rated the talks highly, saying, “I guess on the scale from zero to ten, with ten being the best, I would say the meeting was a 12.” Xi warned against “a vicious cycle of retaliation” and noted agreement on key economic issues.

Yet military frictions persist. Chinese forces have ramped up operations around Taiwan since 2022, with U.S. commanders viewing them as potential invasion drills. In the South China Sea, Beijing’s ships continue to harass Philippine vessels over disputed territories. Hegseth, a combat veteran and advocate for renaming the Pentagon the “Department of War,” has repeatedly called out China’s rapid military expansion as a direct threat. Just days before the meeting, he stressed the need for heightened U.S. training and alliances to deter any aggression.

Analysts see this dialogue as a tentative step forward after China snubbed previous talks over Taiwan arms deals. But with Beijing refusing to rule out force against the island and Washington bound by law to support Taiwan’s defense, the risk of escalation looms. Some observers question whether these meetings mask deeper Chinese strategies, including cyber intrusions and influence operations aimed at weakening U.S. resolve from within. For now, Hegseth’s firm stance signals America’s determination to hold the line against any encroachments on freedom of navigation and ally security in the Pacific.
