- Half a million foreign students on U.S. campuses are illegal aliens, while more than a million others hold student visas, nearly all from non-Western countries with political systems unlike or opposed to America’s.
- Until recently states including Republican-controlled Texas charged illegal aliens low in-state tuition rates while forcing out-of-state American citizens to pay much higher rates, with the four-year difference exceeding $100,000 per student.
- This month the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld by a 2-1 vote a settlement with the Trump Administration under which Texas agreed to stop enrolling illegal aliens at preferential tuition rates.
- Trump’s Department of Homeland Security has ended the F-1 visa practice of allowing foreigners to remain for the unlimited “duration of their status,” replacing it with fixed expiration periods usually set at four years.
- The new rules also cut the post-completion grace period from 60 days to 30 days and restrict foreigners from freely transferring between universities or switching academic programs while in the United States.
- Many international graduate students receive salaries or compensation funded by American taxpayers through direct subsidies at public universities and federal grants at private ones.
- Academic teaching positions in STEM fields are available for fewer than 10 percent of those who obtain PhDs, yet foreign students continue to fill many of these taxpayer-supported slots.
- With Harvard’s Class of 2029 admission rate at just 4.2 percent, every foreign student accepted displaces an American applicant.
- Universities are already complaining of declining international graduate enrollment, which they attribute to Trump’s travel bans and freezes on federal grants.
