- The Justice Department said Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, also known as Shahzeb Jadoon, pleaded guilty to attempting to commit acts of terrorism across national boundaries.
- Prosecutors said Khan had been spreading ISIS propaganda online as early as November 2023 and later began planning attacks inside the United States.
- According to court documents, he communicated his plans to two undercover officers, believing they would help him carry out a mass shooting with AR-style rifles.
- Authorities said Khan originally discussed attacking Jewish targets in another U.S. city before shifting focus to a prominent Jewish religious center in Brooklyn.
- The planned attack was allegedly timed for around October 7, 2024, the first anniversary of the Hamas massacre in Israel, showing the ideological and symbolic motive behind the plot.
- Investigators said Khan described New York City as an ideal target because of its large Jewish population and said he wanted to kill as many Jews as possible.
- He also allegedly sought hunting knives and other equipment, and told undercover officers the attack could become the largest on U.S. soil since 9/11.
- Khan was arrested in Canada on September 4, 2024, while allegedly trying to reach the U.S. border with the help of a human smuggler, stopping the attack before he could enter the country.
- He was extradited to the United States in June 2025, pleaded guilty on April 8, 2026, and is scheduled to be sentenced on August 12, 2026, with the charge carrying a maximum sentence of life in prison.
- The case serves as another grim reminder that jihadist antisemitic violence remains a real threat and that aggressive counterterrorism work is still necessary to protect American communities.
