In a bold move amid New York City’s heated mayoral race, a coalition of prominent financiers and business leaders has launched a new independent expenditure committee aimed at thwarting the campaign of Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani. The group, dubbed “New Yorkers for a Better Future Mayor 25,” has amassed roughly $20 million in funding and filed its paperwork with the New York State Board of Elections earlier this week.

Mamdani, who secured a surprising victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary, has emerged as a formidable contender thanks to his robust social media presence and endorsements from progressive figures like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a self-described democratic socialist. With Cuomo now pivoting to an independent run and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams still in the fray, analysts predict this election could shatter records as the costliest in the city’s history.

The anti-Mamdani initiative has drawn support from high-profile donors concerned about the nominee’s rising popularity. Real estate mogul Gary Barnett, a staunch backer of Adams, has committed $250,000 to the cause. Meanwhile, billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, CEO of Pershing Square, has engaged in discussions with the group and is weighing a contribution, though he has publicly thrown his weight behind Adams.

Adding to the opposition’s momentum, financier Bo Dietl is collaborating with former Mayor Rudy Giuliani to rally an additional $10 million specifically targeted at derailing Mamdani’s momentum.

Dietl voiced his alarm over the lack of pushback against the candidate, stating, “How do we stop this guy? No one’s dealing with him. In the polls, he’s getting so much attention, and none of these other candidates are stepping up.”

While the new committee has yet to endorse any particular rival, its primary focus remains clear: preventing Mamdani from claiming the mayor’s office. This development underscores the deepening divides in New York’s political landscape, where elite donors are mobilizing resources to influence the outcome of what promises to be a fiercely contested battle.
