In this The Daily Signal article, Fred Lucas reports that recent election fraud convictions and state audits provide a real-world test of how the SAVE America Act’s citizenship verification and photo ID requirements could have prevented numerous documented cases of illegal voting.
- The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act would require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote and photo identification to cast a ballot; Republicans continue pressing the Senate to pass it.
- Former Election Assistance Commission Chairman Don Palmer stated that the current citizenship verification system is “broken, porous, and needs to be enhanced,” adding that strong identity checks would have avoided many of these crimes.
- Michigan’s Democratic secretary of state confirmed that 15 noncitizens voted in the 2024 election, including a Chinese national who fled to China after being charged.
- An Iowa audit found 277 noncitizens registered to vote and 35 who actually cast ballots in the 2024 election.
- Virginia removed approximately 1,900 noncitizens from the rolls before the 2024 election, Alabama purged 3,251 in late 2024, and Ohio removed 597 the same year.
- Kansas prosecuted three noncitizens for voting in 2026, including the green-card-holding mayor of Coldwater who pleaded guilty to voter fraud.
- The Heritage Foundation’s Election Fraud Database records at least 17 adjudicated noncitizen voting cases since 2020, plus 12 cases of voting outside proper jurisdiction, 17 impersonation convictions, 49 duplicate-voting findings, and 82 cases of ineligible voting.
- Senate Democrats, including Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, maintain that noncitizen voting is “exceedingly rare” and claim the SAVE Act would impose major obstacles on millions of eligible American voters.
