In this The Post Millennial article, Hayden Cunningham reports that a new University of New Hampshire poll shows Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Pete Buttigieg leading the field among likely Democratic primary voters for the 2028 presidential nomination.

  • Twenty-two percent of likely 2028 New Hampshire Democratic primary voters would support Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez if the election were held today, edging out Pete Buttigieg at 21 percent.
  • Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly follows with 9 percent, California Gov. Gavin Newsom with 8 percent, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders with 6 percent, and former Vice President Kamala Harris with just 5 percent.
  • Ocasio-Cortez’s support has risen 7 points since February, while Newsom has fallen 7 points and Harris has dropped 5 points over the same period.
  • Nearly half of self-identified socialists and one-third of progressives back Ocasio-Cortez, while pluralities of liberals and moderates prefer Buttigieg.
  • Kelly draws most of his support from liberals, Newsom from moderates, and Sanders from socialists.
  • Ocasio-Cortez has not declared a presidential run but has fueled speculation by saying her ambition is “to change this country” rather than seek a title or seat.
  • The Democratic Socialists of America, of which Ocasio-Cortez is a member through its New York City chapter, is reportedly preparing to back a candidate in the 2028 Democratic primary after previously withdrawing its endorsement of her in 2024.
  • On the Republican side, Vice President JD Vance leads with 36 percent support among likely 2028 primary voters, followed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio at 26 percent.
  • The University of New Hampshire poll surveyed 1,458 New Hampshire residents between July 15 and July 20.
