Larry Summers, the economist who served as Treasury Secretary under President Bill Clinton and later as a top advisor in the Obama administration, has announced he’s pulling away from public roles following fresh disclosures about his extensive communications with Jeffrey Epstein. The convicted sex offender’s emails, released by the House Oversight Committee, paint a picture of a disturbingly close relationship that persisted even after Epstein’s 2008 guilty plea for soliciting prostitution from a minor.

In his statement, Summers expressed regret over the association. “I am deeply ashamed of my actions and recognize the pain they have caused,” he said. “I take full responsibility for my misguided decision to continue communicating with Mr. Epstein.”

He plans to continue teaching at Harvard but will otherwise step back to focus on rebuilding personal trust.

The emails, spanning from 2013 to 2019, show Summers turning to Epstein for personal advice, including on how to approach a romantic interest with a woman he had mentored. In one exchange, Epstein positioned himself as Summers’ “wing man.” Another message from Summers included a remark implying that women, on average, possess lower IQs than men.

These details emerged from thousands of Epstein’s correspondences, which also reveal his banter with prominent figures in science and finance, suggesting a web of influence that extended far beyond what was previously known.

Reactions came swiftly from both sides of the political aisle. Senator Elizabeth Warren demanded that Harvard and other institutions cut ties with Summers, while a senior official in the Trump administration echoed the call, pointing to the need for accountability among elites who overlooked Epstein’s crimes. Summers is just one of many powerful individuals who maintained connections to Epstein long after his predatory behavior became public knowledge.

Summers currently sits on the board of OpenAI, holds a tenured professorship at Harvard University, serves as an unpaid fellow at the Center for American Progress, and contributes to Bloomberg News. Responses from these organizations vary: the think tank is reviewing the matter, while others have stayed silent so far. The timing raises questions about whether more documents could surface, exposing deeper entanglements in Epstein’s network that authorities might have shielded for years.

Epstein’s operation, as detailed in the released files, involved cultivating relationships with influential people, often offering “advice” that blurred professional and personal lines. For Summers, a figure long embedded in Washington’s economic circles, this scandal shows poor judgment in associations can erode public confidence, especially when it involves someone like Epstein, whose island and flights have fueled endless speculation about hidden abuses among the elite.

The House of Representatives is expected to vote Tuesday to see if they will compel the release of all Epstein files. The vote is expected to overwhelmingly support it and President Trump has signaled he will sign the bill.

I’d like to know how and why these messages got leaked. Staffer? Wife? Where did this originate? Why the early release?
