Billion-Dollar Data Centers and the Growing Opposition

Retarded? Apparently, many on the “woke right” have gone full-retard with their anti-MAGA rhetoric. For REAL news, opinions, and videos that aren’t retarded, check out the fastest growing conservative and Christian news aggregator!

In this American Thinker article, Janet Levy details how the explosive growth of billion-dollar data centers driven by AI demand is triggering widespread local opposition over water use, power grid strain, pollution, noise, and farmland loss, turning the facilities into a growing political liability.

  • More than 3,000 data centers are already operational in the United States, with another 1,500 planned, and construction is shifting heavily toward rural areas where land is cheaper and more available.
  • Switch’s Citadel Campus near Sparks, Nevada, already operates a 1.3-million-square-foot facility using millions of gallons of water for cooling in the nation’s driest state and is planned to expand to 7 million square feet and 650 megawatts of capacity.
  • Data centers consume 10 to 50 times more energy per square foot than typical commercial buildings; a single large AI facility can use as much power as 100,000 homes, and overall data-center demand is projected to reach 12 percent of total U.S. electricity use by 2028.
  • By 2030, power demand from data centers could hit 130 gigawatts—roughly 13 times New York City’s peak summer load and 25–30 percent of average U.S. consumption.
  • Cooling systems discharge water contaminated with coolants, biocides, and heavy metals, while diesel backup generators emit nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and fine particulate matter linked to respiratory and heart disease.
  • Noise levels inside facilities reach 96 decibels and generators hit 105 decibels, comparable to a jet overhead, with chronic exposure above 65 decibels tied to hypertension, insomnia, and cardiovascular problems.
  • Farmers report multi-million-dollar offers—sometimes five times their original purchase price—to convert generational farmland into industrial sites, offers many are refusing despite the financial pressure.
  • Surveys show 57 percent of Americans oppose data centers in their communities, and seven in ten express opposition in a Gallup poll; Reno has imposed a moratorium until August 2027, and multiple states have introduced legislation for bans or pauses.
  • In northern Virginia, known as Data Center Alley, Blackstone was forced to abandon a planned 22-million-square-foot project after community protests over noise and quality-of-life impacts.
