In this Townhall article, Scott McClallen reports that an Arizona couple who defrauded the state’s Medicaid system out of more than $12 million has been sentenced to federal prison.

  • Thvoughn Lynden Curry and Alexis Daneen Curry, both 34, of New River, Arizona, were sentenced for their roles in a scheme targeting the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, the state’s Medicaid agency.
  • The Currys operated 1 Family Clinic, LLC, a purported outpatient behavioral health clinic in Mesa, Arizona.
  • Prosecutors said they fraudulently enrolled the clinic as a Medicaid provider, including by hiding Thvoughn Curry’s ownership and management role despite his outstanding state felony fraud warrant.
  • After approval, the clinic allegedly billed AHCCCS for services that were not actually provided, including substance abuse therapy.
  • The scheme ran from roughly February 1, 2021, through March 31, 2023, with prosecutors saying 1 Family Clinic often billed in nearly identical patterns and averaged more than 12 hours of service per member per day.
  • The couple targeted the American Indian Health Plan, and prosecutors said vulnerable, low-income Arizonans needing addiction treatment were left unsupervised, with some overdosing or suffering life-threatening emergencies.
  • AHCCCS paid the clinic more than $12 million, money meant for legitimate healthcare services for low-income patients.
  • Prosecutors said the Currys used the money on themselves, buying properties and luxury vehicles, including a 2019 Lamborghini Urus worth more than $300,000.
  • Thvoughn Curry received 88 months in prison, while Alexis Curry received 70 months. Both were also ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay more than $12 million in restitution.
  • The case was investigated by IRS Criminal Investigation with help from Mesa Police and the AHCCCS Office of Inspector General.
