In this Issues & Insights article, Terry Jones reports that a new I&I/TIPP Poll shows Democratic Socialist policy ideas resonate with only a minority of U.S. voters, with clear majorities rejecting core DSA proposals on crime, defense, immigration, government structure, and industry ownership.
- The July I&I/TIPP Poll surveyed 1,473 Americans from June 29 to July 2 (margin of error ±2.8%) on five key proposals from the Democratic Socialists of America’s “Workers Deserve More!” document.
- Only 26% agreed with the abolition of jails and prisons while 62% disagreed; support was nearly identical among Democrats (27%), Republicans (28%), and Independents (22%).
- Just 33% backed defunding the Defense Department while 54% opposed it; Democrats were more supportive (40%) than Republicans (29%) or Independents (30%).
- Amnesty for all illegal immigrants drew 34% agreement and 52% disagreement; Democrats showed a plurality in favor (44%), while 64% of Republicans rejected it.
- Only 27% supported replacing the U.S. president and Supreme Court with a chief executive and high court selected by Congress, while 57% disagreed; majorities in every party group opposed the idea.
- Government ownership of the largest corporations and important industries was backed by 33% and opposed by 52%, with Independents most strongly against it (57% disagree).
- Despite reaching 120,000 members and holding 250 elected offices nationwide, the DSA remains a tiny fraction of the Democratic Party’s more than 45 million members.
- Age is a decisive factor: 46% of voters age 44 and younger supported government takeover of major industries, compared with only 22% of those 45 and older.
- Previous I&I/TIPP polling found more than 40% of voters across parties believe the government should control or own major sectors such as healthcare and energy.
- The article attributes rising openness to socialist ideas among younger Americans to decades of leftist indoctrination in public education and the fading memory of communism’s real-world failures.
