In this The Epoch Times article, Timothy Frudd reports that President Trump warned the United States will “take care of business” if the Iran-aligned Houthis impose a blockade on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, citing previous decisive American strikes that left the group quiet for an extended period.
- Trump made the remarks during an Oval Office meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on July 21, stating that if a blockade occurs the U.S. will handle it as it has done with the Houthis before.
- The Houthis announced a maritime embargo against Saudi Arabia on July 20 and threatened to close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in response to what they called an 11-year Saudi siege and a recent attack on Sanaa International Airport.
- The Bab el-Mandeb Strait is a critical chokepoint connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden; approximately 12 percent of the world’s trade passes through it.
- Houthi-run media claimed on Tuesday that six ships had already been forced to reroute following the imposition of a naval navigation ban.
- The latest threat follows earlier Houthi attacks that targeted more than 100 international vessels in the Red Sea during the Israel-Hamas war.
- In 2025 the U.S. military conducted Operation Rough Rider, striking more than 1,000 Houthi targets including senior missile and unmanned aerial vehicle officials over roughly 45 days of intense action.
- Trump noted that after those “very powerful” strikes and a subsequent Oman-brokered ceasefire, the Houthis posed no further problems for a long period, including during the current conflict.
- Saudi military spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki al-Malki declared that all Houthi threats against transiting vessels would be dealt with swiftly and firmly as acts of maritime piracy in violation of international law.
- The Houthis form a key part of Iran’s “Axis of Resistance,” a network of Iran-trained and equipped groups that also includes Hamas and Hezbollah.
