In this Christian Post article, Jon Brown reports that 80-year-old Catholic Bishop Juan Abelardo Mata Guevara was detained by Nicaraguan police amid an intensifying government crackdown on Christians, along with three other church leaders.
- Mata Guevara, bishop emeritus of Estelí, was arrested June 29 after denouncing religious persecution during mass, taken to a maximum-security prison in Managua, and released later that evening before being detained again the next day.
- Deacon Wilfred Aráuz Rodríguez, Father Francisco Morales, and Father Rigoberto Delgadillo Sánchez were also held for about 12 hours, with police surveillance remaining around Mata Guevara’s home.
- Christian Solidarity Worldwide documented 12 arbitrary detentions of Protestant and Catholic leaders in June alone, part of 309 religious freedom violations in 2025 under the Ortega-Murillo regime.
- Nicaragua ranks No. 32 on Open Doors’ 2026 World Watch List for extreme Christian persecution, with churches among the few institutions criticizing the dictatorship.
