Twelve Discriminatory Scholarships at U Missouri-St. Louis Challenged by Equal Protection Project

In this Legal Insurrection article, the Equal Protection Project challenges what it calls racially and sexually discriminatory scholarships at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.

• The Equal Protection Project filed a federal civil rights complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights against UMSL.
• The complaint alleges that 12 university scholarships discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, and/or sex.
• Five scholarships allegedly violate Title VI, six allegedly violate Title IX, and one is accused of violating both laws.
• Some scholarships reportedly limit eligibility to specific racial groups, including African American students or “underrepresented minorities.”
• Others allegedly restrict eligibility to female students or women returning to education.
• Because UMSL is a public university, the complaint argues these programs may also violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
• The Equal Protection Project says it is not seeking to eliminate scholarships but to ensure they are offered without unlawful discrimination.
• UMSL has stated it is reviewing the complaint and will ensure compliance with federal law if necessary.
