Last Updated on February 15, 2023 A train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio on February 3rd caused a fire that lasted several days and resulted in the release of hazardous chemicals into the surrounding area.
Norfolk Southern Railroad and the Environmental Protection Agency have released a list of the chemicals carried by the train, including:
> Vinyl Chloride: A carcinogen linked to liver cancer, lymphoma, leukemia, brain cancer, and lung cancer. Exposure to the chemical is limited to one part per million during an eight-hour shift.
Ethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether: A highly combustible liquid used in the manufacture of paints and varnish. Ingestion or skin contact can cause headaches, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.
